Thollem-Wrenn-Leibig-Cline Quartet

Serial collaborator and pianist Thollem McDonas is coming to town in the midst of his 6-month U.S. tour. He's assembled a unique quartet of great local improvisers including Steuart Liebig (Electric Bass), Miller Wrenn (Acoustic Bass) and Alex Cline (Drums/Percussion) for an inspired evening of heavy percussion and deep bass. These are 4 masters of their instruments, who bring an extraordinarily wide array of techniques and experiences to their music, and to Bluewhale.

"Thollem thinks quicker than God, but his pressure-packed melodic constructions don't leave you in the dust. Thollem does what few can: He combines extreme imagination with terrific post-classical chops and an ability to communicate through melody. A fresh, disciplined avant-pianist with an attractively extreme viewpoint. Unreal linear explosions."- Greg Burk, LA Weekly

Percussionist-composer “Alex Cline has a musical sensibility and sensitivity that belong to another time... a time when intimate thoughts were best expressed by someone sitting down, setting pen to paper, and sending their innermost feelings by land or sea, to be read by the intended a few days or weeks later... in short, a time when "time" really counted." - Peter Erskine

Miller Wrenn is a bassist and composer-improviser based in Los Angeles whose music explores alternative models of improvisation, creative orchestration, and unfamiliar timbral and melodic gestures in pursuit of expressing universal experiences through an idiosyncratic lens. His first album as a leader, Alternates, was released in May of 2018 on pfMentum Records.

Steuart Liebig began his career performing with Les McCann and Julius Hemphill and nd later founded the groups BLOC, Quartetto Stig and The Mentones. “Steubig” is known for his compositions and impressive discography, having performed and recorded with Alex Cline, Jeff Gauthierm Anna Homler and an array of other stellar Los Angeles Experimental and jazz musicians.
