The Bad Plus has avoided easy categorization ever since, winning critical hosannas and a legion of fans worldwide with their creativity, unique sound and flair for live performance. The intensely collaborative trio has constantly searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.
The band consists of founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) and new member Orrin Evans (piano) — a group of passionate collaborators with no single “leader.” Never Stop II is the first full-length release from this lineup, comprised entirely of original music with each member contributing fresh compositions. The New York Times calls it “an exhilarating document” that sparks an exciting new chapter for the iconic group.

Join us for a performance and jam session hosted by the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble at UCLA featuring Roni Eytan (harmonica), Aidan Lombard (trumpet), Lenard Simpson (alto saxophone), Chris Lewis (tenor saxophone), Paul Cornish (piano), Emma Dayhuff (bass) and Malachi Whitson (drums). The Ensemble will kick off the evening with a one-hour set of new original material and fresh arrangements of jazz standards, followed by an open jam session. All are welcome to participate!
These musicians are students at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. This intensive, graduate-level college program enables a select group of the world’s most promising young musicians to study tuition-free with legendary jazz artists and educators including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Heath, John Scofield, Lewis Nash and Danilo Pérez, among others.
The Institute is a nonprofit education organization with a mission to preserve, perpetuate and expand jazz as a global art form to help unite people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. The Institute’s programs use jazz as the medium to encourage imaginative thinking, creativity, a positive self-image, and a respect for one’s own and others’ cultural heritage. All of the Institute’s programs are provided free of charge to students, schools and communities worldwide. Founded in 1986 as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the organization began operating as the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz in January 2019 in recognition of Mr. Hancock’s commitment to the Institute since its establishment, his expert guidance as Institute Chairman, and his immense contributions to and impact on music, education and humanity.
